Canine Treat Feeding Guide

How Many Treats Can My Dog Have Each Day?
Let’s face it — giving your dog a treat is one of life’s little joys. Whether they’ve nailed a new trick, waited patiently, or just given you that irresistible head tilt... it's hard to say no. And it’s impossible for them to say no to a tasty and nutritious Lord and Lady little number!
But even though they deserve the world, there is such a thing as too many treats (we know, we’re sorry too).
Treats Should Be... Well, Treats
Think of treats like snacks between meals — perfect for rewarding good behaviour, training, or just showing a little love. But they shouldn’t take over your dog’s diet. Their regular food should still be the main event.
The key? Moderation.
How Many Treats for Small Dogs?
If your dog is on the smaller side — think Yorkies, Chihuahuas, or Shih Tzus — it’s best to keep treats to a minimum. Their tummies are small, so even a few treats can fill them up quickly.
A handful of small treats throughout the day is plenty — especially if you’re using them for training or rewards. Less is more for the little ones
How Many Treats for Medium Dogs?
For dogs in the middle — like Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs or Border Collies — you’ve got a bit more wiggle room. You can be more generous than with smaller breeds, but it’s still important not to go overboard.
Spread treats out over the day, use them for training sessions, or as a reward for calm, polite behaviour. Just avoid turning treat-time into an all-day buffet.
How Many Treats for Large Dogs?
Bigger breeds like Labs, German Shepherds or Great Danes can handle a few more treats, thanks to their size — but that doesn’t mean endless snacks. Even the largest pups can get into bad habits (or bad health) if they’re overtreated.
Stick to small, healthy treats and keep things balanced. A few throughout the day is perfect — and keeps those tails wagging.
What About Puppies?
Puppies = treat magnets. They're learning, training, and exploring, so treats are super useful — and let’s be honest, they’ve already won your heart.
Use small, soft treats that are easy to chew, and only give them as rewards during training or calm moments. No need to overdo it — they’re already excited about everything.
